1. break the news

break the news表示说出实情，更多的是“透露坏消息”。

I was devastated when the doctor broke the news to me.
当医生告诉我这个消息时，我简直要崩溃了。

如果要形容平静地接受坏消息，有个表示是take it on the chin，也就是“经受痛苦而处之泰然”。

有一句话是every cloud has a silver lining，意思是黑暗中总有一线光明，所以silver lining就可以表示(黑暗中的)一线光明。

还有引申含义表示“(不幸或不快中的)一线希望”。

The fall in inflation is the silver lining of the prolonged recession.
通货膨胀率下降是长期经济衰退中的一线希望。

3. swing by

杰带全家人到他最喜欢的店里吃饭，可是全家人因为心有芥蒂还没来。

swing by/past (sth)尤指在前往别处的路上“顺便快速访问某地”。

I told Paul we’d swing by his place around 7.30.
我告诉保罗我们会在7点半左右很快地顺便拜访一下他家。
